Windows 98 - Aztech 338 A3D Sound Card
Issue
No sound will play after system exits from suspend mode.

Symptoms
No sound will play after system exits from suspend mode. (This includes .wav file playback, CD-audio, and midi file playback.) Applications appear to function properly, but no sound issues from the speakers. Adjusting volume levels has no effect.

Suspend mode may be entered from the Windows 98 Start, Shutdown menu ("Stand by"), or may occur as a result of one or more Power Management option settings. Once the system has resumed, sounds will not play. Restarting the system temporarily corrects the problem until the next time the system enters suspend mode.

Resolution
The problem has been isolated to the Aztech 338 A3D driver that is installed and ships with the systems.

Solution
Update the Aztech Sound Card driver. Click on the link to download the Aztech 338 A3D driver az338upd.exe. The driver file is a self extracting file that will install the drivers to the C:\PowerSpec\Drivers\Sound folder.

Installation

  1. Delete the contents of the c:\powerspec\drivers\sound folder.
  2. Extract the new sound card drivers. The driver file is a self extracting file that will install the drivers to the C:\PowerSpec\Drivers\Sound folder.
  3. Open Control Panel and Double Click "Add / Remove Programs".
  4. Highlight "YAMAHA Soft Synthesizer S-YXG50" in the Install/uninstall list, and click "Add/Remove".
  5. Reboot the system.
  6. When the system restarts, Right click on "My Computer" and then click on "Properties".
  7. Click on the Device Manager tab and remove all of the devices in "Sound, video and game controllers. The PCI 338-A3D PCI Audio device will not remove. It has a parent device. To remove a device, click on the device to highlight it, then click on the Remove button.
  8. Under Multi-function adapters you must remove the PCI 338-A3D Multifunction PCI Platform.
  9. Open Control Panel and Double Click "Add / Remove Programs".
  10. Highlight "PCI 338-A3D" in the Install/uninstall list, and click "Add/Remove".
  11. Reboot the system.
  12. As the system restarts it will redetect your sound card and ask for drivers. When you are asked for the driver location, use the drop down list and select c:\powerspec\drivers\sound. Then click Next.
  13. The driver wizard will install the new updated drivers and the system will finish loading
